What I’ve Learned about SEO Basics — 6 Comments

  1. The whole SEO just baffles me. How the heck do you really know what people are going to search for. I typically just default to using terms/words that describe what I’ve written or posted in hopes that some other idiot like me is interested in what I’ve written.

    • Not the worst idea – you can still employ some of the basics technically but write your headlines and sub-titles in the language that you’d like to use, written for humans and that your audience use…

At the end of the day, writing for humans is genuine and if in doubt I’d say always the best way to go…

  2. Its good that you had learned the basics of SEO. But the time is changing very rapidly and regular updates are being released by search engines. One needs to work keeping in consideration all the latest updates and work accordingly.

    • You’re right Ethan, but that’s particularly pertinent when it comes to more advanced SEO.

I’m sure the basics I’ve mentioned above don’t change that much and are all good practices – let me know if you think differently…

  3. Hello,

It wasn’t quite what I expected from the title – but it was an interesting read all the same. Sounds like you have the basics covered.

This is a wordpress blog – so you could get yourself the All In One SEO plugin if you like.

I see that you have CommentLuv, so leaving comments on other blogs will do you plenty of good off-page SEO wise. It will get you backlinks, encourage other bloggers to visit and comment on your blog and let you interact and have a bit of fun along the way.

Other than that, I wouldn’t sweat it much. You’re obviously writing good content. As long as you keep it up on a regular basis the search engines will find you.

    Best Regards,

    • Hey Hamish,

what were you expecting from the title? Obviously you know a bit about SEO so you weren’t looking to learn anything? Admittedly I deliberately didn’t call it ‘What I’m learning aboiut SEO’ because one of the things I have learned is to try and make the post title optimised for keywords – so I thought SEO Basics was better. I’m not sure if this is the kind of thing you meant with your comment.

I am kind of glad that it brought you here though (was it from a Google search?) & thanks for leaving a comment. I do have All In One SEO but not sure if I’m using it most efffectively – it adds 3 fields to every page & post – meta title, description and keywords. 1) I’m not sure if the meta title can be left blank and is basically an optional replacement for the usual title, 2) the meta description should presumably be filled in for every page & post which I find a little tiresome but if it helps… and 3) I read that meta keywords are not important anymore, what is far more important (which makes absolute sense to me) is to ‘help out’ Google and other crawlers by structuring your posts well, adding headings (which I naiivelyy didn’t do at all before) and highlighting the expressions you want the search engine to give more weight to. So on that last point, I do fill these out but wonder how many I should fill out and if it is really worth it anyway (if they’re not used).

I’m also worried about having duplliacte meta information on my site but need to look into that more,

On the CommentLuv point – yes I like this plug-in. It makes sense and I think it’s a win-win for all concerned. The only curiosity I have about that is if everyone has it then it loses some value (I have a similar theory about facebook ‘likes’). But I do like this plug-in and intend to keep it for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the compliment! Very much appreciated.

      thanks again for stopping by,
      take care & best wishes,
      Alan
