Try Having a Meditation Partner
This is for a number of reasons.
One of those is I prefer to think in terms of Mindfulness rather than meditation, of being fully present in the moment and that can be done in any given situation. Mindfulness is a form of meditation and can be just as tranquil and restorative as sitting meditation if for example on a walk.
Another reason is that it’s just easy to fall out of the habit.
I have at times meditated each day for a short period (for me at that time, just 3 minutes each day was good enough, with my mind racing and with too much going on, even 3 minutes each day of trying to switch my mind off for a moment was actually extremely beneficial).
It’s difficult to argue with the benefits of a daily sitting meditation.
So why not do it?
What could help is having an accountability partner. I have written before about the benefits of having an accountability partner to keep you on track with whatever it is you’re pursuing, whether it be a new habit, a diet, an exercise regime… it obviously could work well for meditation practice too.
Literally yesterday a friend wrote to me these words: “Do you meditate sometimes? If you do, would you be interested in joining me for a daily 5-10 mins meditation for the next 1 week? We can write to check/remind/confirm on a daily basis 🙂 What do you think?”
So obviously I accepted and now we’re meditating.
Given that meditating can be something quite personal, intimate, difficult, healing… with the right person it is the perfect thing to do with an accountability partner (because you can help each other).
A simple thing (a lot of the best things are simple) but as for me it is probably the difference between practicing sitting meditation and not practicing sitting meditation, I thought worth sharing here.
