Why I Love this Combo: Juicing, Leftovers & Bargains
Well, I know I am.
Health isn’t just about exercise, it’s about eating well, mental health, sleep, getting outside (i.e. sunshine for your vitamin D), drinking plenty of water and also, I’d argue, enjoying every moment we can (because each moment we have is actually very precious).
I tend to get really good at doing a few of these things but not all of them.
Though I am getting better. On the exercise front for example, I came up with a very sustainable minimalist workout (i.e. this minimalist workout) which covers lots of the (7) various areas you need to cover if you really want to stay fit and healthy through more full body functional movements.
On the mental side I’ve done lots of reading, adding daily meditation, practicing more acceptance and spending a lot less time inside my own head (which at times can be a very complex place – think Tron meets The Maze Runner, meets The Crystal Ball. Sometimes it’s just extremely difficult to get out of there!).
But I’ve found drinking enough water or eating enough fruit & veg/whole foods really difficult.
Until now…
After recently helping a friend with some work in his house, I noticed a large container with some kind of smoothie on his kitchen counter. “Is that yours?” I asked. He told me yes, every day he makes a fresh one of those with 2 carrots, a lemon (skin left on), 2 apples & some ginger (topped up with water).
So then I asked him all about his juicer. He has a ‘Ninja’. It’s more convenient than a normal blender because you blend right into the cup you drink out of then put that in the fridge (less mess and cleaning needed).
I was sold. I was getting one. I actually got a VonShef (this one) because I couldn’t find the one my friend has, everywhere seemed to be out of stock.
What is great about it is not just the juicing (which I now do every day). This alone gets me to eat much much more fruit and veg which I just wasn’t doing before but what I really love about it are the following two bonuses:
Bonus 1: I avoid waste. I don’t know about you but I hate throwing out any waste or leftover food (you can argue freeze it but lots of fresh foods are not so great after freezing). Now I don’t have any waste because any leftover fruit and veg gets gobbled up by my new juicer.
Bonus 2: I grab anything that is on special offer in the local co-op (with those bright yellow labels on it) because it is reaching it’s use-by date. I even learned from one of the staff when they price down the items so I try to go at that time to have more choice. I like the ‘surprise’ element of grabbing these bargain items and seeing what I have to work with.
You can call me cheap or say that I love a bargain, I’m happy with either 😉
Bonus bonus: I sometimes add 100% natural fruit juice or raw juice. Just because I have a juicer, it doesn’t mean don’t buy these any more, they make a good mixer instead of or as well as water. This also gives a really good base to start with, experiment and add different ingredients to.
Anyways, that’s why I love my new Juicer, Leftovers and Bargains combo. It’s all about the combo.
I’m also feeling a lot healthier, obvs.
